Religion vs Relationship With God: The Difference That Changes Everything

By Sarah Rybicki | Rybickulous Faith Podcast

Have you ever gone through the motions of Christianity—attending church, reading your Bible occasionally, trying to be a "good Christian"—yet still felt disconnected from God?

You're not alone.

In a recent episode of the Rybickulous Faith Podcast, author and Kingdom Builder Mitchell Beecher shared his powerful testimony of moving from religious performance into an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ. His story serves as a reminder that Christianity was never meant to be a checklist—it was always meant to be a relationship.

When Faith Becomes Performance

Many people grow up around Christianity. They learn the right words, attend the right services, and understand the right answers. Yet somewhere along the way, faith can become more about maintaining appearances than knowing God personally.

Religion often asks:

  • Am I doing enough?

  • Am I following all the rules?

  • What will others think of me?

Relationship asks:

  • Am I spending time with Jesus?

  • Am I trusting God with my life?

  • Am I growing closer to Him each day?

The difference may seem subtle, but it changes everything.

Spiritual Passivity Is More Common Than We Think

One of the themes Mitchell discussed was spiritual passivity.

Many believers genuinely love God but have become comfortable sitting on the sidelines. Fear, insecurity, busyness, and even people-pleasing can keep us from stepping into the purpose God has prepared for us.

Jesus didn't call His followers to simply observe the Kingdom—He called them to participate in it.

Whether that's serving in your church, sharing your testimony, encouraging a friend, discipling others, or simply being faithful where God has planted you, every believer has a role to play.

The Stronghold of Fear

Fear is one of the most common barriers that keeps Christians from fully embracing their calling.

Fear of rejection.Fear of failure.Fear of criticism.Fear of getting it wrong.

But Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of fear.

Often, the breakthrough we seek is found on the other side of obedience.

When we stop focusing on our limitations and start focusing on God's faithfulness, fear begins to lose its grip.

Building the Kingdom Starts Where You Are

When people hear the phrase "build the Kingdom," they often imagine missionaries, pastors, or public speakers.

But Kingdom work happens in everyday places:

  • At your kitchen table.

  • In your workplace.

  • During difficult conversations.

  • Through acts of kindness.

  • By sharing your testimony.

  • Through obedience in the small things.

God isn't asking most of us to become famous.

He's asking us to become faithful.

Truth and Grace Can Coexist

Another important part of our conversation centered around engaging difficult faith discussions with both conviction and compassion.

In an increasingly divided culture, Christians are often tempted toward one of two extremes: avoiding hard conversations altogether or approaching them without love.

Jesus demonstrated a better way.

He never compromised truth, yet people were continually drawn to Him because of His grace.

As believers, we're called to do the same.

Moving From Religion to Relationship

If you've been feeling spiritually stuck, disconnected, or frustrated in your faith, consider asking yourself:

  • Am I pursuing a relationship or simply maintaining a routine?

  • Have I allowed fear to keep me from obedience?

  • Where might God be calling me to step out in faith?

  • Am I building God's Kingdom or simply watching from the sidelines?

The good news is that God isn't looking for perfection.

He's inviting us into relationship.

And relationship changes everything.
