How Jesus Helped Me Overcome Alcoholism: Mark McHenry's Christian Testimony

Some stories remind us that no one is beyond God's reach.

In the Season 3 premiere of the Rybickulous Faith Podcast, Mark McHenry shares a deeply honest testimony of addiction, abuse, brokenness, and the life-changing hope he found in Jesus Christ. What began as a search for identity through success eventually became a journey toward discovering that true freedom isn't found in fame, but in faith.

Chasing Success While Losing Himself

Before founding His Vision Entertainment, Mark pursued a career in country music. From the outside, it looked like he was chasing his dream. Behind the scenes, however, years of childhood abuse, rejection, and emotional pain had left him searching for something to fill the emptiness.

Like so many people, he found himself defining his worth by what he did rather than who he was.

When success couldn't heal the wounds he carried, alcohol became the escape.

When Alcohol Becomes More Than a Habit

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation is when Mark openly says:

"I'm an alcoholic."

It's a simple sentence, but one that took years of pain to admit.

He shares how drinking slowly became normalized, not just in his own life, but by the culture around him. During the isolation of the pandemic, his addiction deepened until he was hiding alcohol from those closest to him.

A frightening blood test revealing liver damage became one of several wake-up calls.

But even then, recovery wasn't just about quitting alcohol.

It was about healing the heart behind the addiction.

Meeting God in the Middle of the Mess

Mark describes detox as one of the hardest experiences of his life.

Feeling physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted, he reached the end of himself and prayed one simple prayer asking God for help.

That moment became the turning point.

As Mark explains during the episode, Jesus didn't wait until he had everything together. God met him exactly where he was—in the middle of his brokenness.

It's a beautiful reminder of the truth found in Mark 2:17:

"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."

Discovering Identity in Christ

One of the central themes of our conversation is identity.

Abuse had convinced Mark he wasn't valuable.

Addiction convinced him he couldn't change.

But Jesus showed him something entirely different.

Instead of finding his identity in his career, his failures, or even his recovery, Mark learned to find it in Christ.

That shift changed everything.

Today, his definition of success isn't measured by awards, recognition, or financial gain.

Success means faithfully serving God wherever He leads.

Turning a Testimony into Ministry

Rather than keeping his story private, Mark chose to share it.

He founded His Vision Entertainment, creating faith-based films and stories that point people toward hope.

His award-winning short film, The Path to The Way, draws from his own testimony and has been recognized for its message of redemption and addiction recovery.

He's also developing a new project called Messengers, continuing his mission of using storytelling to share the Gospel with audiences who may never step inside a church.

Hope for Anyone Who Feels Broken

Near the end of our conversation, Mark leaves listeners with a simple but powerful reminder:

God isn't afraid of your mess.

Your past doesn't disqualify you from His grace.

Your failures don't surprise Him.

No matter how broken you feel, Jesus is still inviting you to come to Him.

If you're struggling with addiction, carrying wounds from your past, or wondering if God could ever use your story, this episode is a reminder that hope is never out of reach.
